Jonathan is a Director of Bankside Law and is head of Advocacy. He qualified as a barrister in 1997 and has extensive experience in professional disciplinary/regulatory work, high value fraud and serious crime. Jonathan is instructed both as leading and junior counsel and has appeared at every level to the Court of Appeal and the Administrative Court. Previously a tenant at 4 Brick Court and 9-12 Bell Yard, Jonathan joined Bankside Law in October 2010 to head up an advocacy unit.
Professional Discipline/Regulatory
Jonathan regularly acts for professionals facing allegations of unacceptable professional conduct, professional incompetence and unfitness to practice at the General Medical Council, The General Osteopathic Council, The General Chiropractic Council, The Health Professions Council and the General Social Care Council. Jonathan's broad experience also enables him to represent the same individuals when there is an overlap in the Coroner's and Criminal Courts. Recently Jonathan appealed the professional conduct committee of the General Chiropractic Council in the Administrative Court securing the first ever judicial review victory against the regulatory body. Jonathan is recognised in Chambers & Partners as a leading individual in this field.
Fraud/Serious Crime
Jonathan has appeared in numerous high profile cases at the Central Criminal Court and beyond that attract high publicity in the media. He has conducted trials of murder, rape, armed robbery, human trafficking, large scale fraud, insider dealing, drug importations and a variety of other violence, drugs and sex offences. Jonathan also has comprehensive experience in Mental Health cases. Of note Jonathan recently defended one of the first ever BERR prosecutions for insider dealing for a well known city restaurateur securing a non-custodial sentence after lengthy legal argument. He is currently instructed in "Operation Saturn" the largest FSA prosecution for insider dealing in history and a multi handed international corruption case.
Jonathan has defended as leading and led junior in numerous carousel frauds in excess of £15 million and is recognised in his field as having an intimate knowledge of this type of criminal defence work. Jonathan was invited to give a webinar lecture for Lexis Nexis on Tax Fraud in October 2011. Jonathan was recently leading counsel in a substantial international banking fraud worth £120 million and a construction industry tax fraud in excess of £24 million.
In addition to conducting the most serious and complex frauds Jonathan acted for a defendant in the notorious "Heathrow Gold Bullion Heist" and recently in operation "Halitus/Ashwick", a multi million pound drugs conspiracy founded on over a years police covert surveillance material.
Jonathan is a member of the Association of Regulatory and Disciplinary Lawyers, the Criminal Bar Association and Middle Temple.
