John Williams is Managing Director of Bankside Law. Against an extensive background defending all general criminal matters, John now specialises in disciplinary / regulatory work and the defence of serious fraud cases.
In the Chambers professional discipline section, John has been described as commanding ‘an impressive presence in the field’. His particular speciality is ‘representing professionals in trouble’ including solicitors, dentists, doctors, chemists, financial advisors, company accountants, chiropractors and licensed conveyancers. He regularly acts for the United Chiropractic Association.

He prosecutes on behalf of the Architects’ Registration Board (ARB). John has been a Legal Assessor to the Insurance Brokers’ Registration Council and the Health Professions Council. He is a Legal Assessor for the General Osteopathic Council.
In the field of serious fraud, John has extensive experience of defending high value serious fraud prosecutions brought by a variety of agencies including the Serious Fraud Office (SFO), Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) (both Customs and Revenue cases), and the CPS (Special Casework Unit). John’s fraud specialism includes complex confiscation proceedings, certificates of inadequacy, receivership applications, third party interests, and civil fraud-related freezing orders.

John also has experience of defending insider dealing prosecutions. He defended the first employee of the London Stock Exchange to be prosecuted for insider dealing, in what was the first case of its kind. John was one of the first tranche of solicitors to be accepted by the Criminal Defence Service as a supervisor for serious fraud work.

John was co-author with Bill Wilson of the chapter in “Fraud: Law, Practice & Procedure” (Butterworths 2004) dealing with defending suspects during the interview process. John also delivers lectures on procedure and law to a wide range of other professionals, including solicitors, accountants and chiropractors. John is a member of the London Criminal Courts Solicitors’ Association (LCCSA), the Criminal Law Solicitors Association (CLSA), the European Criminal Bar Association (ECBA) and the Association of Regulatory and Disciplinary Lawyers (ARDL).
