Dr Sam Godwin

Sam qualified as a doctor in 1995 and worked in hospital medicine in the NHS for a number of years. She then retrained as a solicitor, working in the Litigation and Arbitration team at Lovells in London, specialising mainly on large complex banking fraud cases before a brief return to clinical practice in Accident and Emergency.

Sam then spent 13 years working as a Medicolegal Advisor initially at the Medical Defence Union (MDU) and more recently at Medical Protection (MPS). During this time, Sam used her combined medical and legal knowledge and experience to advise and represent hospital doctors, general practitioners and other healthcare professionals in relation to a wide variety of medicolegal matters. These include:
• GMC and Fitness to Practise investigations and Interim Orders and Fitness to Practise Hearings considering matters of conduct, performance and health

• Coroner’s inquiries
• NHS Trust disciplinaries under Maintaining High Professional Standards in the NHS (MHPS)
• Performers list proceedings
• Criminal investigations including allegations of sexual assault and manslaughter

In addition to casework, she provided telephone advice to doctors on urgent medicolegal issues out of hours and also lectured to healthcare professionals on medicolegal issues faced in the workplace.
Sam is a CEDR accredited mediator and is interested in how mediation can be utilised more effectively in the healthcare and regulatory fields.

At Bankside Law Sam utilises the dual aspect of her medical and legal skills to provide specialist help not just to doctors in the range of legal issues referred to above but also to a wide variety of health professionals including chiropractors, osteopaths, psychologists and psychotherapists. Her commitment to patient/client care was fostered in her early medical career, developed at Lovells and as a medico-legal advisor at the MDU and MPS and is at the forefront of her approach at Bankside Law.

Outside work, she undertakes community mediation and is a governor at a local secondary school.

Any spare time is spent with her family, walking the dog, climbing and looking after the numerous family pets.
