Bankside Law has recently achieved Carbon Zero status following a successful operation to reduce carbon emissions and offset those emissions that are unavoidable.
Bankside Law resolved to reduce the impact of its operations on the environment when it joined the Legal Sector Alliance (LSA) in January 2009 having realised that it is essential to reduce its carbon footprint and minimise emissions by adopting new practices within the business to improve conservation.
One of the biggest initiatives undertaken by the firm was to significantly reduce the use of paper by introducing a new system for scanning all paperwork and faxes and by actively discouraging the unnecessary photocopying and printing of emails. These initiatives, added to the firm’s established policies of enabling staff to work from home where possible, ensuring computer equipment is switched off when not in use, and other energy saving measures, enabled the firm to calculate its carbon footprint at just 9.938 tonnes.
We have engaged a leading carbon management company co2balance to calculate and advise on the reduction of the amount of carbon dioxide that we produce every year, and we offset the unavoidable residue by investing in a well-established project which supplies local communities in Africa with energy efficient cooking stoves to replace their traditional open fires.
